Beloved Pizzeria To Close Doors After 16+ Years Serving Kansas City Metro Area

The Dish to Shift Focus to Manufacture of Frozen Pizzas, Grocery Store Sales

December 8, 2013 (KANSAS CITY, Mo.) – What started as a $1 Christmas gift that transformed into a multistate business venture is now approaching a crucial transition period. Jason and Mattie Ransom, owners of the Dish – Famous Stuffed Pizza Restaurant & Bar, have announced the closing of their Liberty, Mo., location when their lease expires in March. This change comes as the Ransoms have decided to focus their resources and efforts on the manufacturing of company’s frozen pizzas, which are sold in grocery stores throughout Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas. “We want to invite everyone to come by and help us and our wonderful employees celebrate a successful 16-plus years of serving Kansas City one last time before we wind down restaurant operations,” Jason said. “It’s bitter sweet to shut down this side of our business, but by focusing on the grocery sales, we are able to share our creation with more pizza lovers across the Midwest and beyond. It wasn’t an easy decision to close the book on such an important chapter of our lives, but we’ve analyzed the pros and cons and now firmly believe this is the right direction for the business.”

The initial spark for the Dish came in the form of two used deep dish pizza pans Mattie purchased for 50 cents each as a Christmas present for Jason in 1995. Immediately after opening the unexpected gift, Jason went straight to work crafting the recipe that has become so well known in the region. “This may have been the first time Jason was actually surprised by a present we had gotten him,” Mattie said. “He immediately made a couple pizzas for Christmas breakfast – they were terrible.” But after two years of perfecting his recipe and having sampling with family and neighbors, Jason was ready to share his creation with Kansas City. The Ransoms began serving deep dish Chicago-style pizza in September of 1997 in their restaurant and bar located Liberty, Mo. Over time, they developed a fiercely loyal following of deep dish pizza fans. In 2003, the team started manufacturing deep dish and thin crust pizzas to sell out of a cooler in the front of the restaurant. “We have always been proud of how the taste of our frozen pizzas is indistinguishable from the ones we serve in the restaurant,” Jason said. “Because of the care and quality we put into our offering, we have been able to expand our grocery sales from the Kansas City area to a variety of stores in four states, and we aren’t slowing down.” In 2006, the company built a USDA-approved manufacturing facility in the back of the restaurant. When the operation outgrew the space in 2010, the Ransoms moved manufacturing offsite to North Kansas City. Aside from the 104 Kansas City-area stores through which they are currently distributing pizzas, the Ransoms sell their product in 45 stores located in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri, including Hy-Vee, Price Chopper, Hen House, Walmart and other local independent markets. Recently, they have secured a deal with Dierbergs Grocers in St. Louis, which will add 26 additional stores to their current total.
